The best part about making cakes for friends is finding out what they really love. And luckily, for me, things change, we change with every passing year and our interests and passions seems to change, so it’s impossible to run out of “ideas.”
Upon asking the birthday boy’s fiancé for ideas she came back to me with two things; fall and pugs. That was it. So I figured, why not put them together? And this fall pug cake was born.
Shaped cakes are much easier to make when it’s just buttercream and icing so I was glad to learn that that was exactly what the birthday boy liked. Vanilla on vanilla on vanilla on vanilla. No exceptions haha I am hoping he’ll get a little adventurous for their wedding cake :)But honestly, I’m finding more and more people seem to love straight up cake and buttercream. And that’s just fine haha
Anyways, on to the cake:
I used a 6″ base and 4″ cake layers for the head
I shaved the head down into a nice dome and crumb coated it, for the body I placed a 4″ round on top and placed it all the way to one side, I used that round as a stencil to trim the body, going down at an angle so it was tapered. Crumb coated and put both in the freezer to set up.
I colored my icing to a nice tan color, very puggish, and did a second coat to cover and smoothed it out as best I could.
Added some straw supports to the body, trimmed the board off the head piece and stacked it right on top. I then piped icing to cover the cardboard and used my spatula to smooth it out!
Then I used fondant to shape the legs, the tail, the ears and the snout and eyes and lightly pressed each piece into the icing to have it stick.
I used a little piece of fondant to mark the front of the cake, it made placing the face pieces and feet a little easier!
After that was all set, I colored more fondant to make leaves for his fall sweater. Added a little trim and called it a day! Isn’t he a cutie?
The more I looked at it, I felt the ears were out of proportion so I ended up making them larger at the actual birthday party haha The small ears made him look like he had a bowl cut
